Former NHLer Belak found dead in Toronto

TORONTO -- The NHL is mourning the loss of yet another tough guy after Wade Belak was found dead Wednesday in Toronto.
The 35-year-old became the third enforcer to die since May and second in just over two weeks.
New York Rangers forward Derek Boogaard died in mid-May while Rick Rypien of the Winnipeg Jets was found dead Aug. 15.

Funeral for Rypien attracts close to 1,000

Large crowd expected to remember NHLer Rick Rypien at funeral

A large crowd is expected in the picturesque Crowsnest Pass in southern Alberta this weekend at the funeral of NHL tough guy Rick Rypien.
The body of the Winnipeg Jets forward was found in his home earlier this week and police have classified his death as not suspicious.
Rypien’s agent confirms a public service is planned for Saturday at an arena in Blairmore, Alta.

Drunk athlete urinates on girl: Is this the worst flight ever?

A drunken JetBlue passenger who reportedly urinated on an 11-year-old girl mid-flight has been identified as a member of the U.S. Ski Team, according to the New York Post. And the incident may have cost him a chance to compete in the 2014 Olympics in Russia.

VIENNA (AP) — Was it lit or was it cold? The status of a cigar in Arnold Schwarzenegger's mouth at an Austrian airport could decide whether or not he faces legal action.

Amazon Web Services' cloud-computing infrastructure experienced a brief network outage this evening that knocked off line popular sites such as Netflix, Quora, Reddit, and Foursquare.

The network connectivity issues struck Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) at Amazon's northern Virginia site, which handles AWS operations for the U.S. East Coast at 7:39 p.m. PDT and were resolved about 25 minutes later, according to the Amazon Web services Health Dashboard.

Marathon swimmer Diana Nyad was making good headway through the Florida Straits despite some physical complaints Monday, about one-third of the way into her attempt to log a record swim at the age of 61.

Verizon CEO: Hard decisions needed for landline business

After 45,000 Verizon workers walked off the job this weekend, Chief Executive Lowell McAdam issued a letter today to management justifying the need to extract better contract terms, saying that the company must make "additional hard decisions" to keep the cost of its wireline business in check.

Developers get iOS 5 beta 5 for weekend fun

Apple released a fifth beta version of iOS 5 to developers today, a change from its usual habit of delivering such betas during the work week.


According to MacRumors, the release notes include some fixes but no major additions, save for a Hearing Aid Mode designed to improve compatibility between iOS devices and hearing aids.


The MacRumors item also says that like the beta 4 release, beta 5 is available as an over-the-air download, but that users must first erase all content and settings.

France has agreed to extradite Noriega, former Panamanian dictator

French authorities have agreed to extradite former Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega to his native Panama, his lawyer said Tuesday.
Yves Leberquier said France’s Prime Minister Francois Fillon signed the extradition on July 6 and that Mr. Noriega was notified last week.
