Virginia emergency management officials are warning residents to be prepared for widespread power outages and wind damage from the oncoming Hurricane Irene.
A state of emergency was declared by Gov. Bob McDonnell as the state waits on the arrival of the storm.
The declaration clears the way for the National Guard and other services to be utilized. Just under 250 members of the Guard have been placed on alert.
The governors office says that no plans have been made to issue evacuation orders,
