Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and French Open winner Li Na both lost on a day of shocks in the third round at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
Czech left-hander Kvitova, the seventh seed, was trounced 6-1 6-2 by Germany’s 11th seed Andrea Petkovic, while 10th-seeded Australian Sam Stosur also progressed to the quarter-finals by overcoming Chinese sixth seed Li 6-2 6-4.
The most recent grand slam winners were far from the only major casualties though, with Russians Vera Zvonareva and Maria
